Along the historical hiking route Kamperhamrane from high mountains to fjord idyll. The trip is by appointment.
The traffic road over Kamperhamrane is one of the oldest traffic roads over the mountains between Eastern and Western Norway. The route goes through Raudalen in Skjåk and down Sunndalen to Hjelle in Oppstryn. Parts of the journey go over a steep mountain section called Kamperhamrane with ancient, brick stone stairs, from where the route got its name.
According to King Sverre's saga, in 1197 Bishop Nikolaus sent a herd of bagels from Oppland over the mountains to Olden in Nordfjord. It is likely that they went over Kamperhamrane. In documents from Lom as early as the 15th century, we find mention of the roads across the mountains to Sogn- og Fjordane, with detailed instructions on which farms are responsible for the maintenance of the roads and "transport of corpses".
